Growing up with David

Created by John 7 years ago
First met David at Westhoughton secondary modern junior school in 1955 and then we moved to the adjoining senior lads where we got up to mischief swarming up drainpipes with boarddusters and stuffing down the pipes and looking at each other when the teachers couldn't find them we struggled to keep a straight face and smoking Senior Service in the toilets .

When we where 14 /15 we got more adventures turning out on push bikes to little pit rucks in Lostock that we called the ups and downs as we used to fly up and down on them after which we found out if we knocked on the back door of the Bromilow arms the land lord would serve us with a couple of pints.

We both shared the same interests working on farms David on Roscoe Farm and me on Cowl Lees Farm.

In 1964 we change our mode of transport, I had a scooter David had a Honda c110 50cc motor bike (944 NF). One evening we met up with 2 more bikers Jimmy and Brian with whom we have remained friends to this day. I think we all went for our driving test on Davids Honda and passed first time
enabling us all to get bigger better bikes.

We all moved on and had families but still had our nights out together,In the summer of 1975 we learned and enjoyed our waterskiing skills that was a laugh on Coniston Water.

David and I worked together driving HGV's in the form of tippers. David had a class 1 license and we both had transport managers license's enabling us to buy our own concrete mixers which we did and David was well known as Concrete Dave he could have been the Martini Man ( any time any place but least said the better ha ha ha )David enjoyed our visit to Last of Summer Wine country Holmfirth one of many places we planned to visit we also shared a big interest in classic cars and motorbikes and very often went to classics car shows the last one being Ellenroad near Royton October 2016 which also houses the worlds largest working steam mill engine which David loved to watch in operation as we had visited several times.

We also enjoyed our grocery shop once a week and not to forget the Danish Pastry Raisen's which David said were bloody lovely them David had some exceptional friends and drinking partners in no particular order Tony,Roy,Bert and Brian(mol) plus many many more and nobody ever had a bad word for the (young man)a phrase we used regular.

Loved him dearly and will miss him forever.John Ball.
